CAMPECHEOn
December 1999, in the city of Marrakech, Morocco, as a frame of
its third meeting, The Human World Heritage Committee of United
Nations for Education, and Culture (UNESCO), decided to subscript
the Historic Fortified City of Campeche in the Human World patrimonial
list.

The
Historic Fortified City was subscripted under the following criteria:
-
The
port city of Campeche is an example of urbanism in a baroque
colonial city, with a reticular and regular plan, its urban
trace, a model of colonial port cities, reflects the main roll
that it played as a commercial, religious and military connection
point characterized by its high level of integrity and homogeneity.
More than one thousand buildings with a historical value have
survived as witnesses of space and temporal superimposition
of several significant historic periods of our country during
the 16th Century.
-
The
fortification system of Campeche, an outstanding example of
military architecture of XVII and XVIII centuries, was a fundamental
part of the integral defensive system created by Spain to protect
its domains against piracy. Campeche is the only one, from two
that existed in our territory, that has conserved part of its
system in its original status.

Tourists
that have recently visited Campeche have discovered one of the most
important Maya cities already known: Calakmul and Edzná.

Come
to know Campeche, one time was one of the most important ports of
America; the place where the first catholic mass was held in this
continent; once the main place that exported Palo de Tinte, used
to paint textiles and other materials. It gave fortunes to men dedicated
to commerce until it was no longer demanded when the aniline was
invented.

To
know Campeche is to know the beginning of the 'New World'".
